TROOP I NEWS RELEASE Unrestrained Driver Killed in Head-On Crash in St. Landry St. Landry Parish – At approximately 5:15 pm on April 18, 2019, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash on LA Hwy 105 near Artall Road in St. Landry Parish. The crash took the life of 21-year-old Micky O’Connor of Krotz Springs. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 35-year-old Vanessa Lastrapse was driving south on LA Hwy 105 in a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu. At the same time, O’Connor was heading north on LA Hwy 105 driving a 2004 Ford Mustang. For reasons unknown, O’Connor’s Mustang crossed the center line and struck Lastrapse’s Malibu head-on as the two vehicles were negotiating a curve. After the collision, the vehicles came to rest in the southbound lane of LA Hwy 105. Both drivers were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Lastrapse was wearing her seat belt and suffered moderate injuries. O’Connor was unrestrained and suffered serious injuries, to which he succumbed to at the hospital. Impairment is unknown for either driver at this time, but toxicology samples were obtained from both to be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants in a vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired and always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.
