Two Fatal Crashes in Troop A Last Night

Update – Reginald D. Sanders (B/M, age 41) of Donaldsonville was the driver of the Mercury Sable who died in last night’s crash. The driver of the Nissan Altima, Kristal Joseph (B/F, age 23) of Donaldsonville, died at University Hospital early this morning. Joseph’s two passengers, Whitley Lacey (B/F, age 19) of Donaldsonville and Caprice Brown (B/F, age 21) of Baton Rouge, were both wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred. Both women sustained minor to moderate injuries and were transported to Baton Rouge General Hospital by Acadian Ambulance.

BATON ROUGE – Two fatal crashes occurred last night in the Troop A area in a forty-minute period. The first fatal crash, involving two four-wheelers on LA 417 north of LA 10 in Pointe Coupee Parish, occurred at 11:10 p.m. last night. Jeffery Lee (B/M, age 66) of Morganza was driving his 2006 Honda 4-wheeler north on LA 417 when he struck the rear of another 2006 Honda 4-wheeler, being driven by Whitney Davis (B/M, age 22) of Morganza. Lee lost control of his ATV, ran off the road to the left, and struck a fence post. The ATV overturned and Lee was ejected. The Pointe Coupee Coroner’s office pronounced Lee deceased at the scene. Whitney Davis and his passenger, Sean Bethely (B/M, age 27) of Morganza were uninjured in the crash. Davis brought his ATV to a controlled stop on LA 417.

None of the individuals involved in the crash were wearing helmets when the crash occurred. Alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash. However, State Troopers have submitted a sample of Lee’s blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.

The second fatal crash occurred on LA 70 west of LA 3125 in St. James Parish, near the Sunshine Bridge. At 11:58 p.m., a 1992 Mercury Sable was traveling west on LA 70 when it crossed the centerline and entered the eastbound lane. The Sable entered the oncoming path of a 2001 Nissan Altima and struck it head on. The driver of the Altima, Kristal Joseph (B/F, age 23) of Donaldsonville, was seriously injured in the crash. Acadian Ambulance transported her to University Hospital in New Orleans. The driver of the Sable, who was not wearing a seat belt, died from his injuries in the crash. The 41-year-old Donaldsonville man’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Alcohol use by Joseph is not suspected, but Troopers suspect that alcohol use by the deceased driver was a contributing factor in the crash.
