Driver Succumbs to Injuries after Tuesday Night Crash in Livingston Parish

Livingston, LA Shortly after 10:00 pm on May 24, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle crash involving serious injuries on Interstate 12 eastbound east of LA 63 in Livingston Parish. On May 28, 2016, Troopers were informed that 35 year old Cheryl Douglas of Baton Rouge, LA had succumb to injuries she sustained in the crash.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Douglas was traveling westbound on Interstate 12 in a 2006 Nissan Sentra. At the same time, 38 year old Daniel Mendoza of Harlingen, TX was traveling eastbound on Interstate 12 in a 2007 Peterbuilt 18-wheeler. For unknown reasons, Douglas ran off the roadway and crossed the median into the eastbound lanes of Interstate 12 into the path of Mendoza’s vehicle. Douglas was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from her vehicle. Mendoza’s vehicle overturned and came to rest in the median.

Douglas was transported to North Oaks Hospital with serious injuries. She later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased by doctors at North Oaks Hospital. Mendoza was properly restrained and sustained moderate injuries in the crash. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash but toxicology samples were taken from both drivers for analysis.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
