TROOP I NEWS RELEASE August 19, 2015 Head-on Crash Leaves One Unrestrained Driver Dead and Three Others Injured St. Landry Parish– One woman is dead and three others are injured after a head-on crash this morning in St. Landry Parish. On August 19, 2015, shortly after 8:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 749 near Mahogany Drive. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2008 Toyota Camry was traveling north on LA 749 when the driver, 30-year-old Jeri Ceasar of Opelousas, lost control of the vehicle and crossed the centerline of the highway. The other vehicle, a southbound 2002 UD box truck driven by 63year-old Kim Brown of Metairie was struck head-on. Ceasar was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the vehicle. Ceasar was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. An unrestrained child in the rear of Ceasar’s vehicle sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Brown and his passenger were both wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and sustained minor injuries. They were both transported to a local hospital by Acadian Ambulance. At the time of the crash it was raining, but there was no standing water on the roadway. An inspection of Ceasar’s vehicle revealed the rear tires had no tire tread. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Last year in our state, 58 percent of motorists who died in crashes were not wearing a seat belt. Louisiana law requires vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in all seating positions, day and night. Motorists are encouraged to make the smart choice and to always wear their seat belt.
