TROOP I NEWS RELEASE September 15, 2015
Hit and Run Driver Killed in Iberia ParishIberia Parish - On September 15, 2015, shortly before 5:30 p.m., Troopers assigned to Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a hit and run fatality crash located on LA Highway 86 east of LA Highway 31 in Iberia Parish that claimed the life of a Pollock woman.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2006 Ford Mustang, driven by 35-year-old Angela Brown of Pollock, was traveling west on LA Highway 86 and crossed the centerline, side-swiping a 2012 Toyota Sienna, driven by 50 year old Carolyn Medina of Jeanerette. After striking the Toyota Sienna, Brown attempted to flee the scene, but later traveled off of the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.
Brown was properly restrained, but was pronounced dead on scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office. Medina was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was taken and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
It is reported Brown was involved in a hit and run crash in St. Martin Parish, minutes before this crash occurred. St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating those claims.
This crash remains under investigation.
Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. The task of stopping impaired drivers is a joint effort of law enforcement agencies and the public. By never allowing an impaired driver to get behind the wheel and reporting dangerous drivers to law enforcement, the public can play an important role in the reduction of crashes caused by impaired drivers. Making poor decisions in a vehicle such as driving impaired, driving while distracted, or not wearing a seat belt leads to serious injuries and deaths every day across the state. Making the responsible decision can mean the difference between life and death.
Troop I has investigated 49 fatal crashes which have resulted in 52 deaths so far this year.
