TROOP I- NEWS RELEASE October 8, 2015 Child Struck and Killed on LA 83 in St. Mary Parish St. Mary Parish – Shortly before 7:30 pm on October 7, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred on LA 83 near Glenco Road. The crash took the life of a five year old pedestrian. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as a 2001 Ford Taurus operated by 38 year old James Hopkins III, of Baldwin was traveling on LA 83 when a dog and a child ran out onto the roadway. Hopkins was unable to avoid the crash and struck the dog and the child. The child suffered critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital in a personally owned vehicle. While at the hospital, the child succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Hopkins was properly restrained and was not injured. Impairment on his part is not suspected, and he was not cited in the crash. This crash remains under investigation. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians. Contact Information: | |||
