TROOP I NEWS RELEASE
June 23, 2015
Troopers Investigating Death of Two Year Old Child

Acadia Parish At approximately 7:26 pm on June 22, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 365 north of LA Hwy 1099 in Acadia Parish. The crash took the life of 2 year old Mitchell Watson of Church Point.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 32 year old Amber Watson of Church Point was operating a 2013 Ford Edge south on LA Hwy 365. Initial information indicates the 2 year old unrestrained child fell out of the front passenger window. The 2 year old sustained critical injuries and was taken to Our Lady of the Lake in Baton Rouge, where he later died from his injuries.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Watson submitted to a chemical breath test and her results showed no signs of impairment.

This crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.

Louisiana State Law requires the driver of a motor vehicle to ensure that EVERY child under the age of thirteen years in a motor vehicle equipped with safety belts is properly secured, regardless of seating position, in the vehicle. Until a child is six years old AND weighs at least sixty pounds, that child is required by law to be restrained in a proper child restraint system. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of children in the United States. Many injuries and deaths can be prevented by properly using car seats. It is the responsibility of every parent and caregiver to ensure that the children under their care are as safe as can possibly be at all times. While riding in a motor vehicle, the only way to do this is to ensure the child is properly restrained in a child restraint system.

Louisiana State Police Troop I serves as a grant-funded Child Passenger Safety fitting station every Wednesday from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians are available to inspect and to assist with instillation of child safety seats.
