TROOP I NEWS RELEASE
May 23, 2015
Pedestrian Struck and Killed on US Highway 167 in St. Landry Parish

St. Landry Parish Shortly after 9:30 pm on May 22, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred on US Hwy 167 near Interstate 49 in St. Landry Parish. The crash took the life of 41 year old Michael Andrus of Palmetto.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as the pedestrian was attempting cross the northbound lanes of US Hwy 167. At the same time, 61 year old Betty Robert of Opelousas was driving a 1998 Mercury Marquis northbound on US Hwy 167. As the pedestrian attempted to walk across the northbound lanes of US Hwy 167 he was struck by the northbound Mercury.

The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment on his part is unknown at this time, and a toxicology sample was taken from him and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Robert was properly restrained and was not injured. Robert was not impaired and was not cited in the crash.

Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians.
