Duson Man Dies in Single Vehicle Crash

Lafayette Parish – Shortly before 6:30 a.m. this morning, Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a single vehicle fatality crash on LA Highway 342, west of LA Highway 343. The crash claimed the life of 54 year old Michael Dugas of Duson.

The preliminary investigation revealed Dugas was operating a 2013 Dodge Ram 3500 eastbound on LA Highway 342. For unknown reasons, Dugas crossed the centerline then slightly overcorrected while steering to the right. Dugas’ vehicle ran off of the right side of the roadway, struck a ditch embankment then overturned. Dugas’ vehicle came to rest in an upright position in a crawfish pond, south of the roadway. Dugas was properly restrained at the time of the crash, however he suffered fatal injuries.

Dugas was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment was not suspected to be a factor in the crash; however routine toxicology samples were taken and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Troopers would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists that sleep deprivation can impair one’s ability to drive safely. Some studies have shown that cognitive impairment caused by sleep deprivation can affect driving as much as alcohol impairment. Drivers are encouraged to be well rested before getting behind the wheel and to take breaks whenever necessary.

In 2015, Troop I has investigated 32 fatal crashes resulting in 34 deaths.
