TROOP I NEWS RELEASE February 18, 2016 Baldwin Man Arrested on 18 Counts of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer St. Mary Parish – On February 17, 2016, Louisiana State Police Detectives arrested 50 year old Derrick Bodin of Baldwin on multiple counts of Attempted Murder of a Police Officer and Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property. The arrest was the result of an extensive State Police investigation into the St. Mary Parish officer involved shooting incident in December of 2015. On December 27, 2015, Louisiana State Police Detectives were requested to investigate an officer involved shooting on Dumesnil Road in Baldwin, LA. The incident took place as St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a reported shooting and discovered 47 year old Gayneaux Trahan suffering from a gunshot wound. While deputies were tending to Trahan, Bodin began shooting at them from the residence. The Vermillion Parish Sheriff's Office, Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office and LSP-Troop I arrived at the scene to assist. As Bodin continued firing at law enforcement personnel, a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Deputy was shot in both legs. Shortly after, Louisiana State Police-SWAT was able to make entry into the residence and found Bodin suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his face. Bodin was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. Trahan was transported to Lafayette General Medical center where he later died from his injuries. The investigation into Trahan’s death remains ongoing by the Louisiana State Police Detectives. The subsequent investigation by State Police Detectives identified 18 separate law enforcement officers who were targeted and fired upon by Bodin during the incident. It also showed that Bodin had shot his neighbor's vehicle multiple times. Yesterday, Bodin was released from the hospital and booked into the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center on the above charges. This case remains under investigation. Contact Information: | |||
