TROOP I NEWS RELEASE March 8, 2016 Impairment and Lack of Seat Belt Use Factors in Lafayette Parish Fatal Crash Lafayette Parish- A two vehicle crash on LA Highway 93 at its intersection with LA Highway 723 north of Scott has claimed the life of a Scott man. Shortly before 3:00 p.m., 74 year old Joseph E. Faul of Scott, was driving a 1999 Dodge Caravan west on LA Highway 723 and failed to yield for a stop sign at the intersection with LA Highway 93. As Faul’s vehicle went through the intersection, it was struck by a northbound 2014 Ford 250, driven by 60 year old Douglas J. Bourque of Church Point. Faul was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and sustained critical injuries. Faul was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Bourque was wearing a seat belt and sustained minor injuries. Bourque was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries. Troopers suspect impairment was a factor in the crash. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
