| Troop I News Release April 7, 2016 Pedestrian Killed in Crash on LA 31 in Iberia Parish Iberia Parish – on April 6, 2016, shortly after 11:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on LA Highway 31 south of LA Highway 86 in Iberia Parish. Preliminary investigation revealed that 50 year-old Kim Fontenette of St. Martinville was driving a 2007 Ford Taurus northbound on LA 31, when she struck 44 year-old Arthur Frederick of Jeanerette, who walking in the northbound lane near the centerline. Frederick was wearing dark clothing with no reflective vest. Frederick sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office. Fontenette and her 70- year old passenger were wearing seat belts and were not injured. It is unknown if Frederick was impaired at the time of the crash, however routine toxicology samples were taken from Frederick and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Fontenette voluntarily submitted to a chemical test and no detectable signs of impairment were found. The crash remains under investigation. Walking upon the travel lanes of a highway, especially at night is dangerous and should be avoided. A majority of pedestrian fatalities, nearly 70 percent, occur at night. Pedestrians are encouraged to wear light colored clothing, reflective materials, and to carry a flashlight at night.
