TROOP I NEWS RELEASE
February 12, 2016
Impairment and Lack of Seat Belt Use Factors in St. Martin Fatal Crash

St. Martin Parish Shortly after midnight, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash that occurred on LA 3039 near Dean Leblanc Road in St. Martin Parish. The crash took the life of 35 year old Curtis Wolinski of Breaux Bridge, LA.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that Wolinski, was operating a 2005 Dodge Caravan north on LA 3039 and for unknown reasons, ran off of the right side of the roadway. Wolinski traveled through a ditch and struck the embankment. Wolinski was not wearing a seat belt and sustained fatal injuries. The St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Wolinski dead on scene.

Troopers suspect impairment to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was taken from Wolinski and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
