TROOP I NEWS RELEASE November 12, 2015 Franklin Man Killed While Running Across US 90 St. Mary Parish- On November 11, 2015, shortly after 7:15 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a crash on US 90 eastbound near Patterson. The crash claimed the life of 39 year old Samuel Mitchell of Franklin. The preliminary investigation revealed that Mitchell was walking on the south shoulder of US 90 eastbound, when a family member arrived and attempted to talk Mitchell into the vehicle. Mitchell ran away from his family member and began to cross the westbound lanes of US 90, when he was struck by a 2007 Dodge Pick-Up, operated by 83 year old Wallace Mason of Belle Chase. The St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office arrived on scene and pronounced Mitchell dead. Mason was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was not injured. Toxicology samples were taken from Mitchell by the St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office and were submitted for analysis. Mason voluntarily submitted to a chemical breath test and was not impaired. This crash remains under investigation. A majority of pedestrian fatalities, occur at night. Pedestrians are encouraged to walk facing traffic, wear light color clothing, wear reflective materials, and carry a flashlight at night.
