TROOP I NEWS RELEASE February 7, 2016 Driver Arrested for Crash That Kills New Iberia Woman Iberia Parish – Shortly after 2:00 AM on February 7, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash that occurred on LA 182 west near Laperouse Road in Iberia Parish. The crash took the life of 46 year old Tracy Chatman of New Iberia, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that 19 year old Ailayjah Derouen of New Iberia, was operating a 2001 Buick Lesabre eastbound on LA 182, crossed into the westbound lane, and ran off of the left side of the roadway. After leaving the roadway, the vehicle struck several trees and overturned. None of the three occupants inside of the vehicle were wearing seat belts. Derouen and a rear passenger, 20 year old Kyle Derouen, of New Iberia sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Chatman was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. Chatman was pronounced dead on scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office. Troopers suspect impairment to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was taken from Derouen and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Derouen was treated and released into the custody of Troopers. She was transported to the Iberia Parish jail and booked on the following charges: Negligent Homicide, First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring, No Seat Belt, No Driver’s License and Careless Operation. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
