Opelousas Police Request State Police Investigate Fatal Crash Following Pursuit

St. Landry Parish- Early this morning Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I were asked by Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow to investigate a fatal crash at LA Highway 357 and Napp Lane, following a pursuit initiated by his officers.

Shortly after 4:00 a.m., Officers with the Opelousas Police Department attempted to stop a 2010 Jeep Wrangler, driven by 15 year old Deontei Fuselier of Lafayette, for traveling the wrong way on US Highway 190. Fuselier refused to stop and was pursued by officers through Opelousas. While traveling south on LA Highway 357 Fuselier lost control of his vehicle in a right curve, traveled off the left side of the road causing his vehicle to overturn. Fuselier and the other three occupants, all of whom were unrestrained, were ejected from the vehicle.

Fuselier was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner. Two of the passengers in the vehicle, a 13 year old male and a 14 year old male, sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a local hospital. The third passenger in the vehicle, a 15 year old male, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash; however, toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime lab for analysis.

During the investigation Troopers were notified that the vehicle Fuselier was driving had been reported stolen from Lafayette Parish. This crash remains under investigation.
