TROOP I NEWS RELEASE May 31, 2014 UPDATE Fifth Person Dies from Head On Crash This morning Troopers learned that 24 year old Joshua Lejeune succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The next of kin for the male and female passengers in the Honda Civic have been notified. They are identified as 23 year old Justin Bartram and 44 year old Laura Bartram of Opelousas. During the investigation Troopers learned the Bartram’s were mother and son. This crash remains under investigation. Head On Crash Claims Four Lives and Leaves Two Hospitalized Just before 2:30 p.m., 22 year old Jacob Courville of Eunice, was driving a 2005 Honda Civic north on LA Highway 13. A 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by 48 year old Chaman Richardson Mamou, was traveling south on LA Highway 13. For reasons still under investigation, Courville crossed the centerline and struck Richardson’s vehicle head-on. Courville was wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner. Courville had three passengers in his vehicle at the time of the crash. Two of the passengers, a male and a female, were unrestrained and were pronounced dead at the scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner. The third passenger, 24 year old Joshua Lejeune of Port Barre, was unrestrained and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Troopers are still working to notify the next of kin for the male and female. Richardson was restrained and was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries. A passenger in his vehicle, 29 year old Jamie Prejean of Mamou, was unrestrained and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Lack of restraint use continues to be a leading factor in fatal crashes throughout Acadiana. Troopers remind occupants of motor vehicles that Louisiana Law requires everyone in a vehicle to be properly restrained. Proper restraint use prevents ejection and spreads crashes forces over a large area of the body allowing a person to ride down the crash. According to the Center for Disease Control, proper restraint use can reduce a person’s risk of serious injury or death in a crash by half. Remember buckle up every time every trip.
