Opelousas Man Killed in Single Vehicle Fatal Crash

St. Landry Parish- Shortly after 8:00 p.m. last night, Troopers responded to a single vehicle crash on LA Highway 105 south of Krotz Springs that claimed the life of 28 year old Nicholas Lafleur of Opelousas.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Lafleur was traveling north on LA 105 in a 2000 Ford Explorer. As Lafleur traveled northbound, he failed to maintain control of the vehicle causing it to run off the left side of the highway. Lafleur’s vehicle entered a ditch, struck a hurricane fence and a metal post before coming to rest on its driver’s side. At the time of the crash, Lafleur, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Lafleur was pronounced dead on scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office.

Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash. Routine toxicology samples were taken from Lafleur and were submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

This crash remains under investigation.

Impairment and lack of seat belt use continues to be leading factors in fatal crashes throughout Acadiana. Wearing a seat belt properly can greatly reduce a person’s risk of injury in most crashes. Seat belts allow crash forces to be spread across a large area of the body allowing a person to ride down the crash. Unrestrained persons are at a greater risk of sustaining severe or fatal injuries in a crash than a person who is restrained. Buckle up every time in every seating position. Not only is it the law, but it’s the best way to survive a crash.
