TROOP I NEWS RELEASE November 1, 2014 Single Vehicle Crash Claims the Life of a Scott Man Lafayette Parish- This afternoon, a single vehicle crash on LA Highway 723 near Encore Lane claimed the life of a Scott man. Shortly after 3:30 p.m. Troopers responded to a single vehicle crash on LA 723 near Encore Lane. The preliminary investigation revealed that 33-year-old Cortney Leblanc was operating a 1992 Chevrolet pick-up west on LA 723 approaching Encore Lane. For reasons still under investigation, Leblanc’s vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a culvert. Leblanc was not wearing a seat belt and sustained severe injuries. Leblanc was transported to a local hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. It is unknown if impairment is a factor in the crash; however, routine toxicology samples were taken and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Lack of seat belt use continues to be a leading factor in fatal crashes throughout Acadiana. Wearing a seat belt properly can greatly reduce a person’s risk of injury in most crashes. Seat belts allow crash forces to be spread across a large area of the body allowing a person to ride down the crash. Unrestrained persons are at a greater risk of sustaining severe, or fatal, injuries in a crash than a person who is restrained. Buckle up every time in every seating position. Not only is it the law, but it’s the best way to survive a crash.
