TROOP I NEWS RELEASE

December 19, 2013
Troopers Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash on LA 182

St. Mary Parish- A Jeanerette man is dead following an early morning single vehicle fatal crash involving a pedestrian on LA Highway 182 east of Jeanerette.

At 12:15 a.m. 22-year-old Benjamin Breaux of Jeanerette, was walking north in the northbound lane of LA Highway 182. A 2007 Ford Focus driven by 51-year-old Elizabeth Delahoussaye of Jeanerette, was traveling north on LA Highway 182. For reasons still under investigation Delahoussaye struck Breaux from behind. Breaux was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner. Delahoussaye was restrained and was not injured in the crash.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Law requires that all pedestrians walk on sidewalks when provided. If no sidewalk is provided the law requires pedestrians walk as far to the left side of the road as possible against the flow of traffic. Troopers also remind pedestrians that wearing light colored or reflective clothing will increase your chances of being seen by motorists.

While the results in this crash are still pending, Troopers remind pedestrians and drivers that impairment continues to be a leading factor in fatal crashes across Acadiana. A person’s ability to make good decisions is diminished as alcohol is absorbed in the body. Troopers will continue education programs and enforcement campaigns to reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads.
