| TROOP A NEWS RELEASE May 29, 2016 Bicyclist Struck and Killed While Riding on LA Hwy 1 in Iberville Parish Plaquemine, LA – Shortly after 2:00 am on May 29, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash involving a bicyclist on LA 1 south of LA 75 in Iberville Parish. The crash took the life of 22 year old Joshua White of Plaquemine, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as White was traveling southbound in the left lane of LA 1 on his bicycle. At the same time, 50 year old Albert Johnson Jr. of Wichita Falls, TX was also traveling southbound in the left lane of LA 1 in a 1999 Honda Accord. As Johnson approached White from behind, the front of his vehicle struck White and his bicycle. At the time of the crash, White was not wearing a helmet. It is unknown if he had the required white light on the front of his bicycle and red light in the rear. White was also wearing dark colored clothing. White sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Iberville Parish Coroner’s Office. Johnson and his passenger were transported to Ocshner Hospital in Plaquemine with minor to moderate injuries. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash but a toxicology sample was taken from White and Johnson for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind bicyclists to never assume that a motorist can see you. Simple precautions such as wearing an approved bicycle helmet, reflective materials, and avoiding distractions are key to preventing crashes and avoiding injuries.
