TROOP I NEWS RELEASE March 1, 2015 Opelousas Man Killed in Single Vehicle Crash St. Landry Parish – Shortly after 7:45 a.m. on March 1, 2015, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA 35 near Live Oak Road in St. Landry Parish. The crash took the life of 32 year old Reginald Jenkins of Opelousas, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed Jenkins was driving a 2013 KIA Optima north on LA Highway 35 approaching Live Oak Road. Jenkins entered a left curve and traveled off of the right side of the roadway, through a wooden fence and struck a storage building. After striking the storage building, Jenkins’ vehicle continued north and came to rest upside down in a shallow canal. Jenkins was restrained at the time of the crash, but sustained fatal injuries. Jenkins was pronounced dead on scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. It is unknown if impairment is a contributing factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was taken from Jenkins and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Troop I has investigated 11 fatality crashes resulting in 11 deaths as of this date in 2015.
