| TROOP I NEWS RELEASE February 22, 2015 ****UPDATE**** While Troopers furthered their investigation through the night, they identified the driver of the Ford F150 as 22 year old Gerald Minnick of Abbeville. Approximately six hours into the investigation, Troopers located an unoccupied silver 1999 BMW in a trailer park not far from the crash scene. Troopers questioned the owner of the vehicle, 24 year old Virgil Bryant III of New Iberia. Bryant admitted to Troopers he was involved in the crash. Troopers arrested Bryant and transported him to the Iberia Parish Jail, where he was booked for Hit and Run Driving and No Insurance. This case remains under investigation. February 21, 2015 Troopers Investigating Hit and Run Fatality Iberia Parish – Shortly after 6:00 p.m. this evening, Louisiana State Police Troop I was notified of a fatality crash on LA 88 near New Horizons Drive. Preliminary investigation revealed a Ford F-150 was traveling eastbound on LA 88, crossed the westbound lane and struck a silver BMW parked on the shoulder of the roadway. After impact, the Ford continued to travel east, driving off of the road and across a ditch. The Ford truck struck a utility pole and the driver was ejected. The driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the Ford truck has not been identified at this time, however; he was pronounced dead on scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office. After the crash the silver BMW left the scene, but troopers believe it should have damage to the front of the vehicle. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash; however, routine toxicology samples were taken and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
