February 23, 2015 Lack of Seat Belt Use Factor in Fatal Crash Iberia Parish- Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a single vehicle crash on LA Highway 674 near Whitney Drive that has claimed the life of a Jeanerette man. This morning, shortly before 12:30 a.m., 32-year-old Donald Williams Jr. of Jeanerette was driving a 2007 Cadillac CTS west on LA 674. For reasons still under investigation, Williams traveled off of the south side of the roadway, struck a mailbox and a ditch embankment before finally coming to a stop in a parking lot. Williams was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. Williams sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he later died. It is unknown if Williams was impaired when the crash occurred. Routine toxicology samples have been obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Lack of seat belt use continues to be a leading factor in fatal crashes throughout Acadiana. Wearing a seat belt properly can greatly reduce a person’s risk of injury in most crashes. Seat belts allow crash forces to be spread across a large area of the body allowing a person to ride down the crash. Unrestrained persons are at a greater risk of sustaining severe or fatal injuries in a crash than a person who is restrained. Buckle up every time in every seating position. Not only is it the law, but it’s the best way to survive a crash. For More Information Contact: | |||
