TROOP I NEWS RELEASE

December 7, 2014
Bicyclist Killed in St. Landry Parish Crash

St. Landry – A crash on LA Highway 357 near Montgomery Road in St. Landry Parish has claimed the life of an Opelousas man.

On December 6, 2014, shortly after 5:30 p.m., 55-year-old Joseph Norman of Opelousas was traveling north on LA Highway 357 in the northbound lane of travel. Norman, who was riding a bicycle with no lights or reflective clothing, was struck from behind by a 2008 Chevrolet truck driven by 69-year-old Joseph Thibodeaux of Prairieville. At impact, Norman was thrown from the bicycle and died as a result of his injuries. Norman was pronounced dead on scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. Norman was not wearing a helmet when the crash occurred. Thibodeaux was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash; however, routine toxicology samples were taken and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Wearing a helmet properly can greatly reduce a person’s risk of head injury in a crash. Bicyclists who travel on Louisiana roadways should always operate a bicycle with lights and reflectors. Troopers urge all riders to wear a helmet every time they ride their bicycle.
