TROOP I NEWS RELEASE December 9, 2014 Iota Woman Killed in Single Vehicle Crash Acadia Parish- Shortly before 11:00 a.m. this morning, Troopers responded to a single vehicle crash on LA Highway 91 north of Iota that claimed the life of 20 year old Claire Lejeune of Iota. Preliminary investigation revealed the crash occurred as Lejeune was traveling north on LA 91 in a 2000 Toyota Camry. As Lejeune traveled northbound, she failed to maintain control of the vehicle causing it to run off the right side of the highway. Lejeune overcorrected, crossed both lanes of travel, ran off of the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. Lejeune was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Lejeune sustained critical injuries and was transported by Air Med to a local hospital where she later died. Alcohol is not suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash. Routine toxicology samples were taken from Lejeune and were submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Lack of seat belt use continues to be leading factors in fatal crashes throughout Acadiana. Wearing a seat belt properly can greatly reduce a person’s risk of injury in most crashes. Seat belts allow crash forces to be spread across a large area of the body allowing a person to ride down the crash. Unrestrained persons are at a greater risk of sustaining severe or fatal injuries in a crash than a person who is restrained. Buckle up every time in every seating position. Not only is it the law, but it’s the best way to survive a crash. Troop I has investigated 55 fatality crashes resulting in 67 fatalities.
