Pedestrian Struck and Killed on US 190 in St. Landry Parish

St. Landry Parish- On January 16, 2015, shortly before 8:45 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a crash on US Highway 190 at LA Highway 3174 that claimed the life of a Krotz Springs woman .

The preliminary investigation revealed that 50-year-old Elvina Stermer of Krotz Springs, LA was standing in the westbound travel lane of US 190, when she was struck by a 2003 Honda Odessey driven by 48-year-old Irene Kato of Baton Rouge, La. Stermer was pronounced dead on scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. Kato and her two passengers wearing seat belts and were not injured.

Toxicology samples were taken from Stermer and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Kato submitted to a chemical test and was not impaired.

This crash remains under investigation.

Walking upon the travel lanes of a highway, especially during dusk or night time hours, is dangerous and should be avoided. The highway shoulder is generally a safer location upon which to walk. A majority of pedestrian fatalities, occur at night. Pedestrians are encouraged to walk facing traffic, wear light color clothing, wear reflective materials, and carry a flashlight at night.
