Fiery Crash Shuts Down Interstate 10 in St. Martin Parish

St. Martin Parish Shortly after 5:00 am, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash on I-10 eastbound near the Butte La Rose exit in St. Martin Parish. The crash claimed the life of the unidentified driver of an 18 wheeler.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as the driver of the 18 wheeler was traveling eastbound on I-10 near the Butte LaRose exit. For unknown reasons, the driver ran off of the right side of the roadway, struck a bridge attenuator, and began to overturn. The 18 wheeler traveled across both eastbound lanes of travel where it came to rest engulfed in flames.

Due to the fire, it is unknown if the driver was wearing a seat belt. The St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office arrived on scene and pronounced the driver dead. Troopers, along with the St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office are attempting to identify the driver. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash.

Although the investigation remains ongoing and the exact cause of this crash is still under investigation, Troopers urge motorists to avoid all distractions while driving. Distractions, such as cell phones, passengers, radios, etc., take a driver’s focus away from the road. To learn more about the dangers of distracted driving please visit the government’s official distracted driving website, www.distraction.gov. Troopers remind motorists to make good decisions behind the wheel; buckle up each and every ride, drive sober and place your full attention on the road and other motorists.
