| TROOP I NEWS RELEASE July 16, 2017 Unrestrained Driver Killed in Single Vehicle Crash Lafayette Parish– On July 16, 2017, shortly after 1:30 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a single vehicle fatality crash on LA 339 at Chemin Agreable Road in Lafayette Parish. The crash claimed the life of 22 year old Cody Morgan of Baldwin. The preliminary investigation revealed, Morgan was operating a 2006 Saturn Ion southbound on LA 339 and was approaching a left curve. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle failed to negotiate the curve, and began to slide sideways. The vehicle traveled off of the roadway and struck a ditch causing it to overturn. Morgan was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene by the Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office. It is unknown if impairment is a factor in the crash. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
