Driver in Fatal Crash Arrested for Vehicular Homicide
St. Landry – Shortly before 6:00 p.m. on June 3, 2018, Troop I was notified of a single-vehicle fatal crash on LA 182 near Cotton Patch Road. The crash claimed the life of an unrestrained passenger.

The preliminary investigation revealed 30-year-old Alfredo Segura-Prado of Bunkie was traveling north on LA 182 in a 2005 GMC Sierra. While in a left curve in the roadway, the vehicle crossed the centerline into the southbound lane. Prado over-corrected to the right, ran off of the right side of the roadway, and struck a tree as it began to overturn.

A 34-year-old male passenger was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead on scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. His identity is being withheld at this time pending notification to next of kin. Prado was not wearing a seat belt and suffered serious injuries. He was transported to Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria for treatment.

Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was taken from Prado and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Troopers arrested Prado for Vehicular Homicide, Careless Operation, Driving Left of Center and No Seat Belt. Upon his release from the hospital he will be booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail. This crash remains under investigation.

Troopers want to remind motorists of the importance of making safe driving decisions behind the wheel. We also ask that all vehicle components are periodically checked for safety to ensure that they are in proper working order. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troopers want to remind you that Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night.
