| TROOP I NEWS RELEASE June 5, 2018 Unrestrained Driver Killed in St. Mary Parish Crash St. Mary – Shortly after 11:00 a.m. on June 4, 2018, Troop I was notified of a two vehicle fatal crash on LA 87 near Ache-Clement Road. The crash claimed the life of 87-year-old Lenis Clements of Charenton. The preliminary investigation revealed Clements was attempting to cross LA 87 from Ache- Clement Rd. when he was struck by a southbound 2011 Nissan Altima driven by 41-year-old Kashonda Verrett of Franklin. Clements was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Franklin Foundation Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Verrett was wearing a seat belt and sustained minor injuries. She was also transported to Franklin Foundation Hospital for treatment. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were taken from both drivers and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Troopers cited Verrett for operating a vehicle with a suspended license. This crash remains under investigation. Troopers want to remind motorists of the importance of making safe driving decisions behind the wheel. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troopers want to remind you that Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Contact Information: | |||
