Troop I NEWS RELEASE May 13, 2018 Unrestrained Passenger Dies in Single Vehicle Crash Acadia Parish – Shortly after midnight on May 13, 2018, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash on Interstate 10 eastbound near Egan. The crash took the life of 73-year-old Margaret Trinklein of Casa Grande, AZ. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 23-year-old Jessica Whitworth of Casa Grande, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 10 in a 2010 Dodge SUV. For reasons still under investigation, Whitworth’s vehicle ran off of the left side of the roadway into the median and began to overturn. Trinklein, the front seat passenger was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. She sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office. Whitworth was wearing a seat belt and sustained minor injuries. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment. It is unknown if impairment was a factor in this crash, but a toxicology sample will be taken from Whitworth for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
