Unrestrained Driver Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Crash

Iberia Parish – On the afternoon of March 2, 2018, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a single vehicle serious injury crash that occurred on Jefferson Island Rd. near Norris Rd. in Iberia Parish. The driver of the vehicle ultimately succumbed to injuries received in the crash several days later.

Shortly before 2:30 pm on March 2nd, a Troop I Trooper attempted to stop the driver of a 2001 Saturn SC2 for a traffic violation on Jefferson Island Rd. near Norris Rd. The driver, later identified as 17 year old Charles Reed of Delcambre, ignored audible and visual warnings and continued to travel south on Jefferson Island Rd. Reed failed to negotiate a curve, and the Saturn ran off of the left side of the roadway and struck an embankment.

Reed was not wearing a seat belt and sustained severe injuries as a result of the crash. He was transported from the scene to Lafayette General Hospital for treatment. Two teenage passengers in the vehicle were properly restrained at the time of the crash, but both sustained moderate to severe injuries. They were also transported from the scene to Lafayette General Hospital.

On March 5, 2018, Troop I was notified by staff at Lafayette General Hospital that Reed succumbed to his injuries received in the crash. At this time it is unknown if impairment on the part of Reed was a factor in the crash, but standard toxicology samples were taken and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
