| TROOP I NEWS RELEASE June 24, 2017 Impairment and Lack of Seat Belt Usage Suspected in Fatal Interstate Crash Lafayette – Shortly after 2:30 am this morning, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a single vehicle fatality crash on Interstate 10 westbound west of Ambassador Caffery in Lafayette. The crash claimed the life of 24 year old Wayne Istre II of Rayne. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 30 year old Jeremy Williams of Crowley was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu west on Interstate 10. For unknown reasons, the Malibu ran off of the right side of the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned. There were four occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash, and all were unrestrained and ejected from the vehicle. Williams and two of his passengers sustained moderate injuries, while Istre sustained critical injuries. All four were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Istre later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were taken from Williams and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Williams was charged with Vehicular Homicide, 2 counts of First Degree Negligent Injuring, Careless Operation, No Driver’s License and No Seat Belt. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists about the dangers of distracted driving. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. | |||
