TROOP I - NEWS RELEASE September 4, 2016 Pedestrian Killed in Fatal Crash on US 90 in Iberia Parish Iberia Parish- Shortly before 8:30 PM on Saturday September 3, 2016, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I were dispatched to a fatal pedestrian crash on US 90 near LA 329 in Iberia Parish. The crash claimed the life of a 34 year-old Jason Newburn of Hattiesburg, MS. The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that a 2006 Volvo SUV driven by 28 year-old Ab Coulan of New Orleans was traveling eastbound on US 90. Newburn was walking south, across US 90 in the eastbound lane when he was struck by the SUV. Newburn sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased on-scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office. Coulan was properly restrained and was not injured. Blood samples were obtained from Newburn and will be sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Coulan submitted to a chemical breath test and was not impaired. The investigation is ongoing. Crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines. Pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas. Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night. Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance safety for pedestrians. | |||
