The initial investigation revealed 46 year-old Jose Gonzalez of Iota, was traveling northbound on LA 97 in a 1989 Marmon farm vehicle, towing a flat-bed trailer. While traveling north, Gonzalez was forced to slow down due to farm equipment occupying the northbound lane of travel. Darrel Duhon was operating his 2003 Honda motorcycle north behind Gonzalez as he began to slow down. Duhon struck the left side of the flat-bed trailer and was ejected off of the motorcycle. Duhon and the motorcycle, slid into the southbound lanes and was struck by a 2016 Ford Truck, operated by 56 year-old Jose Roque-Valverde of Bunkie.

Duhon was wearing a DOT approved helmet, but suffered critical injuries. He was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Gonzalez and Roque-Valverde were both wearing seat belts and were not injured. Gonzalez and Roque-Valverde both submitted to a chemical breath test and were found not to be impaired. Toxicology samples were taken from Duhon and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that distracted driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.

Troop I has investigated 38 fatality crashes resulting in 39 deaths as of this date in 2016.
