Virginia Man Arrested in Crash that Killed Missouri Woman

Butte Larose Today, shortly before 10:00 am, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two vehicle fatality crash that occurred on Interstate 10 Eastbound near Butte Larose in St. Martin Parish. The crash took the life of 93 year old Louise Brunder of St. Charles, MO.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as 43 year old Scott Swank of Woodbridge, VA. was traveling eastbound in the left lane on Interstate 10. Swank crossed the center line and struck the rear left side of a Maroon Honda Van, driven by Rebecca Henry of St. Charles, MO. After impact, the Honda Van struck a guardrail and both vehicles came to rest in the roadway. Rebecca Henry and her front seat passenger, 74 year old Lawrence Henry, were both wearing seat belts and sustained minor injuries. Brunder who was properly restrained, was seated in the rear of the vehicle, but sustained critical injuries. Brunder was transported to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. Swank was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Troopers suspect impairment on the part of Swank to be a factor in the crash. A toxicology sample was taken and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Rebecca Henry voluntarily submitted to a chemical test and was not impaired.

Swank was booked at the St. Martin Parish Jail on the following charges: Vehicular Homicide, Reckless Operation, two counts Vehicular Negligent Injuring and Improper Lane Usage.

This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving impaired, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
