Unrestrained Driver Killed in Single Vehicle Crash

St. Martin Parish - On May 22, 2016 shortly after midnight, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA 347 near Sonny Drive in St. Martin Parish. The crash took the life of 66 year old Clyde Gedward of St. Martinville, La.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Gedward was operating a 2014 Ford Mustang south on LA 347 and failed to negotiate a curve. Gedward's vehicle ran off of the right side of the roadway, striking a fence and a telephone pole. Gedward was not wearing a seat belt and sustained critical injuries. He was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

It is unknown if impairment is a factor in the crash. Routine toxicology samples were taken and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the dangers of distracted driving. Inattentive and distracted drivers account for a large number of serious crashes across the state every year. You can effectively reduce the chances of being involved in a crash by ensuring that while behind the wheel of a vehicle you remain focused solely on the task of driving. Louisiana State Police would also like to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes.
