TROOP I NEWS RELEASE July 8, 2016 Head-On Crash in Iberia Parish Kills Bossier City Man New Iberia, LA – Shortly before 10:15 am this morning, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two vehicle fatality crash that occurred on the eastbound U.S. 90 Service Road at LA Hwy 675 in Iberia Parish. The crash took the life of a 24 year old Rakeem Blakes of Bossier City, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Blakes was driving a 2006 Ford Explorer eastbound on the U.S. 90 Service Road and failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. Blakes crossed over into the westbound lane and struck a 1990 Kenworth operated by 69 year old Billy Romero of New Iberia, LA. Due to Blakes’ vehicle catching fire, it is unknown if he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Blakes suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office. Romero was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. Impairment is unknown at this time; however, a toxicology sample was taken from Blakes and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Romero voluntarily submitted to a chemical breath test and his results indicated he was not impaired. While investigating the fatal crash, Troopers received information that Blakes had just been involved in a hit and run crash along U.S. 90 near the Broussard area. Troopers are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fatal crash, along with following up on information obtained about the hit and run crash. This crash remains under investigation.
