TROOP I - NEWS RELEASE October 31, 2016 Pedestrian Killed in Crash in St. Landry Parish St. Landry Parish – Last night, at approximately 7:20 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on LA 182 north of LA 358. The crash claimed the life of 92 year-old Dale Britt of Opelousas, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that 27 year-old Corey Jackson of Opelousas, LA was driving a 2011 Kia Rio southbound on LA 182, approximately 1 mile north of LA 358. For unknown reasons, Britt walked from the roadway edge into the southbound lane of LA 182 directly into the path of the Kia. Jackson was unable to avoid the crash and struck Britt with front of the vehicle. Jackson was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and sustained minor injuries. He was transported to a local hospital and treated. Britt sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is not considered to be a factor in the crash. Troopers determined Jackson was not impaired. Standard toxicology samples were taken from Britt and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Walking upon the travel lanes of a highway, especially at night is dangerous and should be avoided. A majority of pedestrian fatalities, nearly 70 percent, occur at night. Pedestrians are encouraged to wear light colored clothing, reflective materials, and to carry a flashlight at night.
