| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE Unrestrained Driver Killed in Port Allen Crash PORT ALLEN – A Port Allen man was killed when his pickup truck was struck by an eighteen-wheeler just after 2:00 p.m. this afternoon on LA 415 in Port Allen. Charles D. Hall (W/M, age 76) was driving a 1999 Chevrolet pickup west on LA 987-3 when he failed to yield to a 1996 Peterbuilt Tractor hauling a box trailer loaded with flowers. The Peterbuilt, traveling north on LA 415, struck the driver’s side of the pickup as it veered to the left and then overturned on top of the pickup. Hall was not wearing a seat belt and was killed in the crash. Darryl Hurst (B/M, age 68) of Baton Rouge, a passenger in the pickup, was seriously injured in the crash. Acadian Ambulance AirMed transported Hurst to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, where he is still in serious condition. The driver of the Peterbuilt, Edward Carr (W/M, age 48) of Okeechobee, FL, was properly restrained when the crash occurred and was not injured. Although alcohol use by Carr was not suspected to have been a factor in the crash, Carr submitted to the chemical test for intoxication. The results of the test showed that Carr did not have any detectable alcohol in his system. Alcohol use by Hall is suspected to have been a factor in the crash, and Troopers have submitted a sample of his blood to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. This is the second fatal crash that Louisiana State Police Troop A has worked today. Each of the fatal crashes included a driver who was not properly restrained when the crash occurred. Statistics and studies show that the safest way to travel in any vehicle is to be properly restrained. Louisiana State Troopers will continue aggressive enforcement efforts to ensure maxim adherence to Louisiana’s primary seat belt law.
