| TROOP I NEWS RELEASE June 1I, 2017 Unrestrained Driver Killed in Single Vehicle Crash St. Landry Parish – Shortly after 6:30 pm on June 10, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I responded a single vehicle fatality crash on LA 10 east of LA 360 in St. Landry Parish. The crash claimed the life of 52 year old Richard Chambers Melville. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Chambers was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu eastbound on LA 10. For unknown reasons, Chambers’ vehicle traveled off of the right side of the roadway. Chambers overcorrected which caused the vehicle to travel across both the east and westbound lanes of travel. Chambers’ vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. Chambers was not wearing a seat belt and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead on scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. It is unknown if impairment is a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were taken and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists about the dangers of distracted driving. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death. While not all crashes are survivable, proper use of seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. | |||
