| TROOP I NEWS RELEASE January 6, 2017 Eunice Man Killed in Acadia Parish Crash Acadia Parish – Shortly before 6:00 a.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Highway 365 at its intersection with LA Highway 367. The crash claimed the life of 38 year-old Joseph Devillier of Eunice. The preliminary investigation revealed Devillier was operating a 2017 Toyota Yaris southbound LA 367 approaching LA 365. For unknown reasons, Devillier failed to stop at the stop sign and was struck by a 2013 Dodge Ram truck, traveling west on LA 365. The driver of the Dodge Ram was identified as 30 year-old Justin Savoy of Branch. Devillier and his passenger, 38 year old Angelita Sonnier were both wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Devillier sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene by the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office. Sonnier sustained moderate injuries and was transported to local hospital. Justin Savoy was wearing a seat belt and sustained minor injuries. He was transported to Opelousas General and is being treated for his injuries. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash, but standard toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis. This crash is still under investigation. Inattentive and distracted driving continues to be leading causes of crashes in our state. Louisiana State Police continue to urge motorists to avoid all distractions while driving, inside and outside the vehicle. You can effectively reduce the chances of being involved in a crash by ensuring that while behind the wheel of a vehicle you remain focused solely on the task of driving. This is the first fatal crash investigated by Troop I in 2017.
