| TROOP I NEWS RELEASE January 28, 2017 Unrestrained Driver Dies in St. Martin Parish Crash St. Martin Parish, LA – Shortly after 9:00 pm on January 27, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a single vehicle fatality crash on LA 182 near Boudreaux Road in St. Martin Parish. The crash took the life of 29 year old Leon Lewis of St. Martinville, LA. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Lewis was traveling westbound on LA 182 in a 2002 Buick Century. For reasons still under investigation, Lewis’ vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway, rolled over, and struck a tree. Lewis was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Lewis was pronounced deceased at the scene by the St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office. It is unknown if impairment is a factor in this crash. A standard toxicology sample was taken from Lewis and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained, regardless of seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
