HEADQUARTERS NEWS RELEASE UPDATE: Additional Murder Charges Filed Arrest warrants were signed on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 for Brian Lyn Smith, Kyle David Joekel and Brittney Keith. Brian Smith and Kyle Joekel are both charged with two (2) counts of 1st Degree Murder of a Police Officer and three (3) counts of Attempted 1st Degree Murder of a Police Officer. Brittney Keith is charged with two (2) counts of Principal to 1st Degree Murder of a Police Officer and three (3) counts of Principal to Attempted 1st Degree Murder of a Police Officer. Kyle David Joekel was released from the hospital this afternoon and booked accordingly. All of the suspects have been relocated to the St. Charles Parish Correctional Center. ”As I attended Deputy Nielsen's funeral today, my heart continues to be filled with sadness with the loss of these two fellow police officers,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson. “Our prayers are with the families of the fallen and injured deputies, the sheriff’s office, and all of our greater law enforcement family. State Police is committed to diligent, thorough and complete investigation of these horrific acts. We will continue to leverage our resources in this investigation to ensure that the facts are presented and those responsible for these heinous crimes are arrested.” UPDATE: Kyle David Joekel remains hospitalized at an area hospital to be released at an undetermined time.
