LSP TRAFFIC ADVISORY

September 1, 2012
I-10 Eastbound at Laplace Open, Still Restricted

Laplace – Shortly after midnight, Interstate 10 eastbound was reopened at LA 22 in Sorrento, but still restricted to one lane through Laplace. Troopers remain on the Interstate at milepost 209 in Laplace monitoring the roadway and keeping traffic flow slow through the area. Water remains on the roadway, and only the inside lane remains open. The exit ramps at US 61 and LA 641 remain closed, so motorists are advised that LA 22 is the last exit available before reaching the elevated portion of I-10 between Laplace and Kenner.

Last night, there was very heavy traffic on Airline Highway through Gonzales and on LA 3125 through Lutcher and Gramercy as motorists tried navigating their way into New Orleans. Alternate routes, such as Interstate 12 to I-55 and LA 70 across the Sunshine Bridge to LA 3127 are recommended. Troopers will continue to monitor the roadway and will open the additional eastbound lane on I-10 as soon as it is safe to do so.

I-10 westbound at I-55 and US 61 at the Ascension / St. James Parish line remain closed because of high water. Troopers and DOTD officials will continue to monitor the roadways and will open them to traffic as soon as possible.

Troopers remind motorists of the dangers of attempting to drive through standing water. There have been several incidents throughout southeast Louisiana over the past four days where motorists have driven into standing water that turned out to be much deeper than expected. Roadway “wash-outs” cannot be seen under as little as one inch of water in the roadway. Also, slight curves in a roadway submerged in water can easily go unnoticed and motorists can end up in a ditch along the side of the roadway totally submerged.
