HQ - NEWS RELEASE September 17, 2011 National Child Passenger Safety Week: September 18-24 Research shows car seats save lives. When properly installed and used they can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for children younger than one year old and by 54 percent for children between 1 and 4 years old. Unfortunately, nearly three out of four car seats are not used properly. “Louisiana troopers are committed to working closely with our partners and other safety advocates to help parents make the kind of choices that will keep kids safe," said Superintendent of State Police Colonel Mike Edmonson. "Unfortunately, fatalities represent just the tip of the iceberg. For every child killed in a crash, eighteen others are hospitalized and another 400 receive medical treatment. Our goal is to educate parents and caregivers about the law and best practices when traveling with children.” During Child Passenger Safety Week (September 18-24, 2011), Louisiana State Police would like to remind and encourage all parents and caregivers to take advantage of child safety seat check events taking place statewide on Saturday, September 24, 2011 to ensure that their children are getting the very best protection. Furthermore, all LSP troops are child seat inspection/fitting stations. Please contact your local troop for times and appointments. To locate additional inspection stations in your area, please go to www.nhtsa.gov or www.LSP.org for troop information. Louisiana State Police urges everyone to help reduce injuries and the tragic loss of life by buckling up themselves and their children — every trip, every time.
