Edmonson, Superintendent News Release January 12, 2013 National AMBER Alert Awareness Day On January 13th, 2013, the AMBER Alert program will be commemorated not only in Louisiana, but across the country. Since the program’s inception in 2002, 602 children have been successfully recovered in the United States as a direct result of the AMBER Alert plan. In Louisiana, only twelve (12) AMBER Alert activations have been issued since the system became operational in October of 2002, with no AMBER Alert activations since 2008. While other states may vary in the number of AMBER Alert plans, Louisiana has only one, statewide plan and it is administrated by Louisiana State Police with the cooperation of its media partners. The Louisiana AMBER Alert Plan criteria adheres to the recommendations by the Department of Justice, but also takes into account situations where there is an increased level of urgency, yet do not rise to the level of an AMBER Alert activation, through the use of the “Endangered/Missing Child Advisory.” “The effectiveness of these advisories was most recently noted in the Bossier Parish case this month when non-custodial parents kidnapped their young children and the children were safely recovered within days,” said Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson. “While the AMBER Alert system is a resource we hope we never have to use, we are confident it will continue to be successful due in great part of the cohesive partnerships with our public, the media and other law enforcement agencies.” As of January 1, 2013, AMBER Alerts are no longer disseminated by text message via www.wirelessAMBER Alerts.org, but will now be sent automatically to all cell phones that are Wireless Emergency Alert (WAE)-capable, regardless of the customer’s location. For example, if a user is a resident of Dallas, TX but is in Baton Rouge, LA, the user would receive any AMBER Alerts issued by Louisiana State Police (as Louisiana has one statewide plan, as opposed to several regional plans).
