HEADQUARTERS NEWS RELEASE January 10, 2014 Trooper Cadets Report to Training at State Police Academy BATON ROUGE – This weekend, the Louisiana State Police Training Academy will welcome a select group of men and women who aspire to serve the citizens of Louisiana as Louisiana State Troopers. The cadets will report to the LSP Training Academy in Baton Rouge on Sunday, January 12th, to start nineteen weeks of intensive training before they earn the privilege of wearing the ”gold boot” badge of the Louisiana State Police. The candidates for State Police Cadet Class #92 were derived from a pre-existing list from 2010 and chosen after completing an extensive hiring process. The nineteen-week academy will include classroom instruction on topics such as state and federal laws, ethics, crash investigation, and impaired driver detection. The cadets will also participate in various practical and field training exercises consisting of scenario-based training, pursuit driving, firearms training, defensive tactics and a rigorous daily physical fitness routine. The newly hired State Police cadets will be joined by Department of Public Safety (DPS) Police Officers participating in the advanced law enforcement training program. The DPS Officers will train side-by-side with the State Police cadets providing them the opportunity to build upon their law enforcement skills enhancing their ability to protect and serve the citizens of Louisiana. “I am excited about the opportunity to train and deploy new Troopers throughout Louisiana,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. “Molding and shaping these cadets into Louisiana State Troopers is a tremendous responsibility. The staff of the Training Academy is prepared to welcome these Cadets and their training program will be guided by the Core Values of the Louisiana State Police. The path to graduation will not be an easy one; however, the reward is the opportunity to contribute to the safety and security of Louisiana’s citizens.” This will be the first State Police cadet class since September of 2008. Cadet Class #91 graduated 74 Troopers in February of 2009. In preparation for State Police Cadet Class #92, over 700 applications were accepted with 249 individuals successfully completing background requirements and the interview process. State Police Cadet Class #92 is anticipated to graduate 50 Louisiana State Troopers.
