Background

In April 2013, suspected members of various violent groups, including the “Big Money Block Boyz,” were given a warning to take back to their members and associates. Community leaders gave participants three options: (1) Seek BRAVE’s assistance to leave group violence behind, (2) leave group violence behind without BRAVE’s assistance, or (3) continue in violent activities and face the most serious of law enforcement actions.

After failing to heed the warning of Community leaders and Law Enforcement, The Louisiana State Police, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, Baton Rouge Police Department, and the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s Office began a lengthy multi-agency investigation into criminal activity involving the “Big Money Block Boyz.”

On February 7th, 2014, six separate search warrants were executed simultaneously resulting in seven arrests. In addition to the six arrests, police confiscated eight pounds of Marijuana, more than a half pound of Cocaine, two Marijuana cigarettes, 13 firearms, six 30 round magazines, more than 100 rounds of ammunition and a bullet proof vest. The intense investigation continued and last night a Grand Jury handed down the indictments.

“The efforts of all the investigators should demonstrate to the public that law enforcement partnerships are leading the way in making our communities safer. This multi-agency investigation should be an indication of the future,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. “Partnerships are now the norm in law enforcement. It is what the public expects and demands of us as we work to dismantle criminal organizations in Louisiana.”

“Members of the Big Money Block Boyz, including some who were arrested today, were present at the April, 2013 call in,” said District Attorney Hillar Moore. “At the call in we told each group that the violence must stop, and the next person to commit a homicide would make his entire group a target. The Big Money Block Boyz did not listen to our message, and today we are fulfilling the promise we made to them and the entire parish of East Baton Rouge.”

“We are not playing around…we mean what we said and we are going to live up to those promises. It’s really about people getting their issues resolved. If you don’t live up to your part of the program, you will be arrested. All law enforcement agencies in the Baton Rouge area are committed to this project and are working together to stop the senseless violence that has become too common in our city,” said Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie.

“I think that we are sending a clear message to the community and especially to criminals,” East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said. “We mean business. These are not just words, we are following with action. Those that choose not to get with the program, will face the consequences.”

Through these partnerships, law enforcement agencies across the state will continue to investigate criminal activity and exhaust all means necessary. The Violent Crimes Unit involving all these agencies stands proudly together to continue to bring to justice those who commit criminal acts and choose to be adversaries to the well-being of our communities.
